Zapata Peninsula Attractions The Zapata Peninsula has many interesting attractions. Playa Girón, known as the site of the final battle between Fidel Castro’s Armed Forces and the counter-revolutionary army, which took place in 17-19 April 1961. Cueva de los Peces, a natural pool (cenote) lyinig along the fault. 70 m deep, it’s ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling. Guamá, home to a holiday resort, built in ten islands in the Laguna del Tesoro, it features Aldea Taína, a reconstruction of a typical pre-Columbian village. Other nice beaches can also be found here such as Playa Larga, as well as other interesting places like the Corral de Santo Tomás, a refuge and observation point for migratory birds, which can only be visited with an official guide.
